Hi, Did you know you can buy ivory legally in the United States? It's crazy, right? Many people think that ended in the 1980s. What's even crazier is that the United States has one of the largest markets for ivory in the world – a lot of the activities that are escalating this elephant poaching crisis are happening in our own backyard. Legal ivory – ivory that predates the 1989 global ban brought on by worldwide outrage over skyrocketing elephant poaching – is indistinguishable from illegal ivory in most cases. Worse yet, obtaining documentation to prove the "legality" of ivory just requires some simple paperwork. One of the reasons the U.S is a major destination for ivory is because there's lax laws at both the federal and state levels.
