Plastic bags are a problem for Rhode Island, the United States, and World-Wide. Eco Youth United, a group of seniors at the Juanita Sanchez Educational Complex, would like to do something and take action about this problem. Deposable plastic bags are often carelessly thrown out, used as garbage bags, blown out of garbage trucks, dumpsters, or the Johnston landfill and can travel miles from where they are released. The essential problem is that plastic bags cause immense harm, they easily end up caught in a myriad of tangle; lining roadsides, littering parks, yards and leaf piles; clogging storm drains, and making their way down stream to Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island’s coastal waterways, eventually, impacting both the ravine and marine life. Ultimately, our Narragansett Bay, the Johnston landfill, and resources all over the state, are inundated with thousands of plastic bags that cause many problems over their lifetime of 1000 years.
