Each year, about 920,000 shelter animals are euthanized. Normally the holding time before an animal gets killed is five to seven days but can be as little as 48-72 hours. Animals being put down in shelters before even getting a chance to find a home isn't the only issue with kill shelters some other being ; lack of adequate food and water, poor record keeping resulting in more animals being killed accidentally , and pound seizure policies. 

            Kill shelters should be illegal in the US because of how inhumane it is to kill these innocent animals. The purpose of shelters is to help animals find a home, some not even getting the chance because they are put down in such little time do to overcrowding.  There's ways to prevent overcrowding in these shelters such as spay and neutering your animal. This prevents unwanted animals from being borned and put into shelters where there already isn't enough space. Veterinarians could take action and attempt to encourage spaying and neutering animals . Not only does spaying and neutering help with overcrowding of shelters but also benefits your own animals.

         Not only is euthanizing dogs in shelters cruel it is also costly.  The average cost of euthanizing animals is about $35-300.  About 950 cats and dogs are euthanized a day. Imagine how much that adds up a year. No kill - shelters benefits everyone more.  No kill shelters saves animals and rehabilitates them. At least 90% of the dogs and cats entering these shelters are released to an owner alive. While in kill shelters only 25 percent of dogs and 24 percent of cats are adopted .

          There is better ways to deal with overcrowding of shelters rather then kill shelters. There must be action taken about kill shelters. Support your local no kill shelters and spread awareness.
