Revoke the Tax-Exempt Status of the NAACP

The Issue

We are deeply concerned about the actions of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). As a citizen who values transparency and integrity in our democratic processes, I believe that their activities are deceiving the public and undermining voter processes in our country. The NAACP, while claiming to advocate for civil rights, has been involved in practices that many Americans find questionable. Their tax-exempt status as a non-profit organization is based on their commitment to social justice and equality; however, there is growing concern about whether they are truly upholding these principles.

The IRS grants tax-exempt status to organizations that operate exclusively for religious, charitable, scientific or educational purposes. Any political activities must not constitute their primary purpose. Yet there have been instances where it appears that NAACP's actions may be crossing this line.

We urge Congress and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to review whether this organization should continue enjoying its tax-exempt status given these concerns. This is not an attack on civil rights or equality but rather a call for transparency and accountability from all organizations that enjoy such privileges from our government.

Although NAACP units are 501 (c) (4) tax-exempt
organizations, the national NAACP is a 501 (c) (3)
organization, which is restricted in how it can assist
people in registering or getting out to vote. In addition,
NAACP policy specifically prohibits units' engagement
in political campaign activity
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

The NAACP campaigns for and sponsors specific political parties such as the Democrats, their candidates along with their policies, which directly and indirectly affects the people they are said to protect and help advance. For example, the NAACP has a grading system for political candidates and it's overwhelmingly one sided towards the Democratic party at 90+ percent. They also have political lobbyists and Political Action Committees (super PACs) that have contributed financial donations to support and oppose specific campaigns and candidates. Even though voter encouragement is allowed, supporting specific candidates and policies are prohibited under the 501 (c) (3) statute. This has led to certain chapters losing their tax-exempt status in the past.
