The Issue

As students of Laura Highlands High School in Uniontown, PA, we are getting older, and technology is becoming more ingrained in every aspect of our lives, especially in education. The complete ban on cellphone use within the school premises not only hinders our ability to learn efficiently but poses a significant risk to our safety.

In a world where information is at our fingertips, smartphones have become essential tools, not distractions. Whether it's using apps for classroom learning, setting reminders for assignments, or accessing educational resources, having our phones can dramatically enhance our learning experience. While recognizing the importance of maintaining focus during lessons, a total ban is impractical and outdated.

Moreover, having a cellphone is crucial for our safety. In dire situations, such as an active shooter incident, the ability to contact authorities or family members could be a matter of life or death. Smartphones serve as our link to the outside world, our first line of communication with emergency services, and our means of staying informed when each second counts.

We propose revising the current policy to allow regulated cellphone use, placing clear guidelines on when and how phones should be used during school hours. By doing so, we balance the need for attentiveness in class with the essential safety and learning benefits that technology affords us.

We ask the administration of Laura Highlands High School to reconsider and update their policy on phone usage to reflect modern educational standards and enhance student safety. Please sign this petition to support our initiative for a safe and technologically integrated learning environment.
