Before the community could voice environmental concerns for Frederiksted and its mangroves, coastal wetlands, water tables, and sea turtle nesting grounds...
Senator Vialet introduced a 3-word amendment to an unrelated bill, less than 48 hours before its passage, that allows rum distilleries to be classified as “agricultural processing plants.”
So NOW the law may permit the construction of ANY rum distillery on nearly any Virgin Islands agricultural land. TODAY, a landowner has permits in hand to build a distillery on the West End across the street from beaches, at the mouth of our “rain forest.”
Join us Friday, July 22 at 6:30PM at the gubernatorial campaign headquarters of Senator Vialet, located across the street from The Market, where he is holding a campaign BBQ social. Wear a black shirt and bring a sign that says, “REVOKE THE MAHOGANY RD DISTILLERY PERMITS” if you can. This is a peaceful gathering to ask questions of the candidate who sponsored this Act.
