The Issue

The new sign ordinance introduced by the City of Foley has placed an unfair and burdensome restriction on our small businesses. These regulations affect the ability of our local entrepreneurs to effectively advertise and promote their services and products, which is essential for their survival in today’s competitive market. Many of these businesses are family-owned and have been serving our community for years, providing essential goods and services that we rely on daily.

The ordinance imposes strict limitations on the size, type, and placement of signs and banners. This not only creates a significant burden due to restrictions but also diminishes the visibility of businesses to potential customers. According to a report from the Small Business Administration, signage has a direct impact on sales, and a poorly visible location can lead to a reduction in revenue by up to 20%.

In addition, these regulations disproportionately affect newer businesses striving to establish themselves, making it harder for them to gain a footing and thrive. By restricting their ability to attract passerby attention, we are stifling innovation and economic growth in our local community.

We urge the City of Foley to reconsider these regulations. Our proposal is to either repeal the ordinance or revise it in consultation with local business owners to implement fairer, more flexible guidelines that support, rather than hinder, small businesses. We need to protect the interests of our community's backbone—the small businesses.
