Revoke Texas' Social Media Ban for Teens

The Issue

I'm a 13-year-old growing up in Texas, and I love connecting with my friends and learning new things online. But now, there's a law being considered that would stop anyone under 18 from using social media. This law might seem like it's protecting us, but it's actually stripping away our voice, our ability to stay connected, and our chance to be part of global conversations.

Social media isn't just about selfies and memes. It plays a critical role in youth advocacy, education, and personal development. During the pandemic, online platforms were lifelines for students to learn and maintain social ties. A survey by Pew Research shows that 45% of teens say they are online 'almost constantly.' For us, it's a vital part of daily life.

Although concerns about online safety are valid, completely banning social media use isn't the solution. Instead, we should advocate for educational programs on digital literacy and safety, enabling teens to use the internet responsibly and safely. Empowering young people with the right tools and knowledge is far more effective than blanket bans.

This law would alienate teenagers, causing more harm than good. We should focus on constructive solutions that address safety and allow us to reap the benefits of being connected. Join me in urging Texas legislators to reconsider this ban and instead support educational initiatives that truly protect and empower young users.
