It deeply saddens me, as a reptile lover and the proud guardian of two thriving snakes from 401 Reptiles, to witness the appalling conditions that reptiles endure at Petco stores across the nation. This issue hits close to home because I have experienced firsthand how compassionate reptile retailers can ensure the health and well-being of their animals. In stark contrast, Petco’s practices reflect neglect, resulting in the harm, suffering, and often premature deaths of countless reptiles.

At Petco, reptiles are subjected to inhumane conditions. They have insufficient lighting, minimal space, and often lack access to freshwater—a basic necessity for their survival. Many are crammed into small tanks, fostering a high-stress environment that can lead to infections and other health issues. I've personally witnessed reptiles being mistreated: flicked or hit if they display natural behaviors, such as striking. It’s heart-wrenching and unacceptable.

Reptiles are complex creatures that require specific care, including correct temperatures, humidity levels, and diet, which Petco consistently fails to provide. According to PETA and the Humane Society of the United States, proper reptile care is often neglected in large chain stores, leading to a shorter lifespan and a poorer quality of life for these captivating animals.

We need immediate action to re-evaluate and revoke Petco's rights to sell and house reptiles. By prohibiting them from acquiring and displaying reptiles, we can push for a shift towards more ethical and compassionate treatment, aligning with guidelines enforced by the Animal Welfare Act and other humane societies.
