The Issue

From so far I’ve seen students including myself complaining about this phone law, and I’m seeing people are thinking it’s not right. New Jersey schools due to the restrictive bell to bell phone ban, I feel compelled to address the far-reaching impact of this law. This well-intentioned policy aims to minimize distractions in the classroom, but it has inadvertently created several significant problems for students. Many students rely on their phones for essential tasks such as managing their schedules, accessing educational resources, or communicating with family for urgent matters during school hours.

As I said before, to minimize distractions in the classroom but it also takes away the memory to take photos with friends, get people’s numbers, take videos with your favorite teachers for memories, family also may need you. what’s also another thing is technology, when used responsibly, can enhance learning experiences by providing immediate access to information, learning support, and educational apps. A total ban restricts students' ability to engage with lessons using modern tools and potentially alienates them from their own education in an increasingly digital world. Several studies suggest that integrating technology in a controlled and guided manner is more beneficial than outright denial of access (e.g., a research from the Pew Research Center indicated over 60% of teachers believe more digital resources could enhance student learning). Which right there proves a lot of things.

We urge the New Jersey Department of Education and school administrations to reconsider the existing blanket ban and instead implement a policy that allows thoughtful use of mobile phones. Possible solutions include:
1. Establishing specific 'tech-friendly' periods during school hours where students can use phones for engaging with others and educational purposes.
2. Training teachers on how to integrate phone usage into their lesson plans effectively.

This is not just about lifting a ban, but about modernizing our schools in a way that prepares students for the digital age. By signing this petition, we are calling for a balanced approach that recognizes both the potential benefits of technology and the need for focused engagement with people and classroom environments. Let’s work together to find a solution that respects both educational goals and students' needs for connectivity and technology. Please join us in urging authorities to amend the current law and support measures that will better serve New Jersey's students. Thank you and hopefully you all agree. 9/4/26
