Revoke censure to CM Maria Tran

The Issue

From: Concerned Residents of Brooklyn Park and Supporters of Public Integrity

To the Honorable Court and Jury of Hennepin County:
We, the undersigned residents, taxpayers, and advocates of democratic accountability, respectfully submit this petition on behalf of Council Member Maria Tran, who has been wrongfully censured and sanctioned for fulfilling her sworn duties as an elected official.

Council Member Tran was elected to represent her constituents with honesty, courage, and independence. Instead, she has faced retaliation, exclusion, and an unjust censure that violates her rights, damages her reputation, and limits her ability to serve her community.

WHY WE APPEAL TO THE COURT:
We firmly believe the censure imposed on Council Member Tran was not based on misconduct, but on her persistence in asking hard questions, challenging improper practices, and standing up for transparency. The censure—used as a political tool—has resulted in unjust sanctions that impair her official capacity, including:

Being blocked from participating fully in city business;
Facing public shaming and reputational harm;
Having her term of office diminished in impact and access.
These are not just political consequences—they are constitutional harms that undermine her role as a public servant and our right, as voters, to fair representation.

WHAT WE ARE ASKING FOR:
We call on the Hennepin County Court and Jury to:

Recognize that the censure and its accompanying sanctions are retaliatory and unjust;
Restore Council Member Tran’s full rights and authority as an elected official;
Provide legal relief and justice for the damage these sanctions have caused to her term in office;
Uphold the core values of due process, equal protection, and non-discrimination under the law.

OUR BELIEF:
Council Member Maria Tran has demonstrated integrity, service, and courage in the face of adversity. The censure against her is not only unfair—it is a dangerous precedent that chills free speech and civic accountability. No public servant should be punished for questioning power or defending the public good.

Let this Court affirm that justice in America includes protecting those who serve with integrity—even when it makes others uncomfortable.

With trust in the Constitution and our judicial system.
