The Issue

As an advocate for intercity rail travel in the United States, I am deeply passionate about reviving the Amtrak Hilltopper train service. This service was more than just a train route; it was a crucial link between Boston and Cattlesburg via Roanoke, Washington DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and several other cities. The discontinuation of this service has created a significant void in our transportation system.

The Hilltopper provided an essential connection for many communities along its route. It facilitated not only personal travel but also economic activity by connecting businesses with their customers and suppliers. Moreover, it offered an environmentally friendly alternative to car or air travel.

The revival of the Hilltopper could potentially extend to either Bristol or Cattlesburg which would further enhance its utility and reach. This is not just about restoring a piece of history; it's about improving our present transportation network and planning for future growth.

Given that trains are 34% more energy efficient than cars (US Department of Energy), reviving this line could also contribute significantly to reducing carbon emissions - aligning with national goals on climate change mitigation.

I urge you to consider this petition seriously as we strive towards creating a more interconnected America through sustainable modes of transport like rail travel. Please sign this petition if you believe in the importance of robust intercity rail services like the Amtrak Hilltopper.
