We residents of Makakilo, Hawaii, are very concerned about the safety and well-being of our community. With over twenty thousand residents living in Makakilo, we have only one way into and out of our residential area.  The August, 2023 Maui wildfires in Lahaina highlight the very real danger associated with limited evacuation routes.

For many years now, the City and County of Honolulu has been failing the community with road design and planning setbacks with no real progress. We want the authority to manage the Makakilo Drive Extension Project moved to State control under Oahu Metropolitan Planning Organization oversight to expedite the MDE construction.

The OMPO has proven its effectiveness for funding and managing transportation projects across Hawaii. By placing SRC110 under their jurisdiction within the Transportation Improvement Project, we hope to see expedited action on the MDE project.   Federal funding will dry up by the end of the year so speed is critical.

We are not asking for a band-aid solution, “emergency road”; we are asking for the original 4,000 ft. extension of Makakilo Drive for quicker response during emergencies and a second access to the H-1 Freeway. Let's make the Makakilo Drive Extension Project a reality soon!
