As an alumni of the prestigious John F. Kennedy High School Marching Band in New Orleans, I have watched with concern as the program I once cherished, built upon the remarkable efforts of Dr. Walter Harris, has drifted from its storied path. Dr. Harris, a legendary figure in our community, single-handedly molded a band where excellence was the only standard, producing countless professional musicians who carried the Kennedy name with pride across the globe.

Today, however, the spirit that once drove students to reach their highest potential seems to be waning. Many of us, former students and alumni, have witnessed a decline in the passion and dedication that once defined the Kennedy Marching Band. While we appreciate and thank Mr. Keith Thomas for his years of service, it is becoming increasingly clear that a change is necessary to preserve the high standards and the vibrant legacy that Dr. Harris established.

Over the past five years, the enthusiasm and commitment of the students under Mr. Thomas's direction seem to have declined substantially. Alumni, even those who were not part of the band, have expressed their dissatisfaction with the program's current state. This is a call for a redirection towards the values of excellence and commitment that made our band renowned.

By engaging with dedicated individuals who hold firm to Dr. Harris’s vision, we can rejuvenate our band, fostering a new generation of passionate and skilled musicians dedicated to excellence. We, therefore, urge a comprehensive review of the leadership of the John F. Kennedy Marching Band and the implementation of necessary changes to restore its former glory.
