The Issue

As fans of The Beginning After the End, we're asking TurtleMe and the webcomic team to consider revisiting Sylvie's POV in Webcomic Chapter 256, which adapts one of the most emotional moments from the novel.

In Volume 7's "Shared Affliction," we experience Arthur's reaction to his father's death through Sylvie's perspective. What made this chapter so memorable wasn't just Arthur's grief, but the way we experienced that grief through Sylvie and the connection they shared.

This is where we feel the webcomic lost much of what made the original scene so powerful.

In the novel, Arthur remains outwardly silent and motionless as he kneels beside his father's body. Yet through their bond, Sylvie feels the full extent of the emotions tearing through him: overwhelming grief, guilt, regret, and rage. These emotions surge from Arthur into Sylvie with such intensity that she clutches her chest, sinks to the ground, and struggles to breathe, unable to endure the pain of what he's feeling.

This contrast was one of the most impactful parts of the chapter. While Arthur appears frozen in silence, Sylvie's reaction reveals the emotional devastation he's experiencing internally. She isn't simply crying because she's witnessing someone she loves grieve. She's feeling that grief alongside him through their bond.

Despite everything flowing through their connection, Sylvie struggles to crawl toward Arthur, gasping and crying, until she finally reaches him and embraces his back. It's only then that the emotional barrier Arthur has built around himself crumbles, and he breaks down into tears.

The webcomic retains an embrace, but changes how this moment unfolds. Sylvie is already beside Arthur rather than struggling to reach him, and much of the buildup preceding his breakdown is removed. Without Sylvie clutching her chest, collapsing under the weight of Arthur's emotions, and crawling toward him, the embrace loses much of its original significance. The focus shifts almost entirely to Arthur's breakdown rather than the shared experience that made Sylvie's POV so special.

Other meaningful moments were also omitted, including the ambient mana reacting to Arthur's anger and despair, Sylvie's realization that she could offer something nobody else could through their bond, and her later recognition that the anger she felt over Reynolds' death was her own.

The adaptation also leaves out one of the novel's most powerful lines:

"Arthur—the Lance, the general, the white-core mage—was, at that moment, only a boy who had lost his father."

This line captures Arthur's vulnerability beneath all his accomplishments and responsibilities. Coming from Sylvie's perspective, it also shows how deeply she understands him. She sees beyond the powerful mage and general to the boy who has just lost his father.

These omissions matter because "Shared Affliction" wasn't simply another depiction of Arthur mourning Reynolds. It was a rare opportunity to experience Arthur's internal turmoil through Sylvie, showing the extraordinary depth of their bond and how they shared this moment of grief.

We understand that adapting a novel into a webcomic requires changes, especially when it comes to internal narration, and we appreciate the artwork and effort that went into the chapter. There are moments the adaptation handles well, including the passage of time and Arthur's grief in the aftermath. Our concern is specifically with how Sylvie's perspective was conveyed.

We're respectfully asking TurtleMe and the webcomic team to consider revisiting this particular sequence in a future revision.

We're not asking for the entire chapter to be redone or for every paragraph of narration to be included. Much of the missing buildup could potentially be restored through a few additional panels showing Sylvie clutching her chest, sinking to the ground, struggling toward Arthur, and finally embracing him before his breakdown. A handful of short narration boxes conveying the emotions flowing through their bond, along with the omitted reflection on Arthur's vulnerability, could make a meaningful difference.

We also understand that the comic's publishing situation is currently uncertain, and we don't expect immediate changes or commitments. We simply hope this sequence might be reconsidered if the opportunity arises.

This petition comes from a place of genuine appreciation for TBATE and its creators. Sylvie has relatively few POV chapters, and "Shared Affliction" is one of the moments that best demonstrates how much Arthur and Sylvie mean to one another.

We aren't asking for a sadder scene. We're asking for the shared grief, emotional buildup, and connection between Arthur and Sylvie that made the original so unforgettable to be preserved.

If you share these concerns, please consider signing in support of a possible future revision.
