Revise Washington's Law on Collector Plates

Revise Washington's Law on Collector Plates
The Issue
In Washington State, the current law, https://app.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=46.18.220 allows any car that is 30 years or older to qualify for collector plates. This is concerning because it makes no distinction between a rare, well-preserved classic and a mass-produced vehicle that has been wrecked multiple times. This loophole is being exploited by individuals who are not preserving automotive history but are simply avoiding full tab fees by driving these cars daily.
Cars originally designed for everyday use, which historically hold no significant value or have undergone extensive modifications, should not easily attain the prestigious status of a collector vehicle simply based on age. There should be a respect for true vintage and classic cars, distinguished from those used as mere cost-saving measures.
This issue affects not only car enthusiasts who value authentic restorations but also state revenue that could be reinvested in maintaining our road infrastructure. It is vital to amend this legislation to reflect a fixed qualification date – such as 1980 – ensuring only cars manufactured before this year are deemed eligible for collector plates.
Setting a defined date will help maintain the intent of the law, providing true collectors the privilege they deserve while preventing abuse of the system. This change not only preserves the integrity of what it means to be a collector vehicle but is a step towards more equitable and responsible vehicle registration.
Join us in urging the Washington State Legislature to make this necessary change to the collector plate law, enhancing the cultural and automotive heritage of our community while stopping improper exploitation. Sign this petition to help keep the roads fair and foster appreciation for genuine vintage cars.
