The Issue

Thurston High School in Springfield, OR has announced a new advisory schedule set to be implemented next year. As a concerned member of this community, I've closely observed the impact that this change will have on our students. Unfortunately, the schedule does not benefit our students effectively and is more likely to contribute to increased tardiness rather than alleviating it.

Students at Thurston High School have been accustomed to an advisory schedule that not only permits them to efficiently use their time but also fosters an environment conducive to academic success and personal growth. However, the newly proposed schedule drastically shifts the timing and sequence of advisory periods, causing significant disruption to students' routines. These changes may lead to longer days and subsequently increased tiredness, which inevitably impacts both academic performance and overall wellbeing.

Currently, figures from similar implementations in other school districts have shown that a poorly structured advisory schedule can increase tardiness by an alarming rate of 15-20%. These statistics reflect the urgency of the matter at hand. Procrastination and disengagement are likely outcomes, further hindering students’ abilities to keep up with rigorous academic demands.

We propose a thorough review of the advisory schedule before its final implementation. Our goal is to ensure that it aligns with the students' needs and encourages punctual attendance, equipping them for future academic and life success. By engaging in open dialogues with students, parents, teachers, and administrators, we can collaboratively develop a more effective schedule that serves our community.

Join us in urging the Thurston High School administration to reconsider and modify the advisory schedule in a way that genuinely supports the students' best interests. By signing this petition, you advocate for a solution that prioritizes our students' educational experience and wellbeing. Sign now to make a difference.
