The Issue

Learning languages can be enriching, empowering, and essential for students. However, as a parent of a Class 9 student in Karnataka, I am deeply concerned about the current implementation of the 3 language rule. While intended to broaden students' linguistic abilities, the rule often forces them to juggle languages without mastery, causing undue stress and anxiety.

My daughter, Aditi, embodies this challenge firsthand. Every evening, she struggles to complete her homework, balancing between class subjects and the additional load of three languages—none of which she feels competent in entirely. Instead of fostering a love for languages, this rule is making her dread language classes altogether.

Karnataka's educational policy regarding languages needs a more thoughtful approach. The 3 language rule demands students to learn Kannada, Hindi, and English. While each language has its own merits, the enforcement of all three compounds the students' workload, diverting their focus from honing these languages deeply to merely skimming through them for assessment purposes.

Consider this: a study by the Indian Institute of Education concluded that students who are bombarded with more than two languages simultaneously often show a decline in comprehensive language skills. They are less likely to achieve proficiency compared to peers who had the opportunity to focus thoroughly on two languages.

To address this significant issue, I propose the following solutions:

1. **Re-evaluation of the current language policy**: Conduct an in-depth analysis led by educators, linguists, and psychologists to assess the impacts of the 3 language rule.

2. **Flexibility in language choice**: Allow students to choose two primary languages with an optional third, rather than enforcing all three.

3. **Enhanced language support program**: Develop supplementary language programs that target proficiency rather than basic multilingualism under stress.

These measures can transform our current system, promoting a love for language learning and ensuring our children gain the proficiency needed to use these languages effectively in real-world scenarios.

Please join me in urging the Karnataka State Education Department to reassess and revise the 3 language rule for our students' brighter and balanced future. Sign this petition to make a meaningful change for our children and the future of education in Karnataka.
