The Issue

As a hardworking parent in today's demanding society, I am appealing for change and flexibility in the policies governing school holiday leave. The escalating costs of living, coupled with external factors such as the climate and current affairs, are placing enormous strains on families who aim to provide their children with a much-needed break to recharge and learn from a different environment.

A key point for review in the current policy pertains to the rigid definition of "exceptional circumstances", which can result in unwarranted fines for parents. Parents like myself believe that strong attendance records, good progress in school, and financial considerations should contribute towards the determination of these so-called "exceptional circumstances".

It is instrumental for these leave requests to be evaluated individually, rather than swiftly advancing them to penalties, raising another point of uncertainty - where do these fines get allocated? There is a strong demand for transparency in the system – if fines are inevitable, at least they should be re-invested into improving the educational experience for the children who generate them.

Therefore, I call to you, fellow parents, educators, and anyone who believes in the importance of balanced childhood and practical parenting. Let's urge our education departments to revise the policy around term-time holidays, making it more understanding of individual student's attendance and academic records, as well as the financial pressure on parents hard hit by the high costs of holidays outside of term time.
