Revise Professionalism Standards to Recognize Creative Expressions in the Workplace
The Issue
I am someone who has faced constant criticism for demonstrating my artistic abilities at my workplace. This creative expression, as organic to me as breathing, isn't a distraction, but rather a fuel that intensifies my work efficiency. Yet, it's often deemed 'unprofessional' or 'self-advertising'. This scenario not only applies to me but to numerous individuals whose natural propensity towards creativity often gets scrutinized due to an outdated perception of 'professionalism.'
Productivity and creativity go hand in hand. According to a study by Adobe in 2016, companies encouraging creativity achieved 1.5 times the market share compared to less creative counterparts (Adobe, 2016). Taking cues from these findings, it's clear that creativity is not incompatible with professionalism.
Conversations sparked by my drawings at work have enabled vast engagement within our community, leading to productive discussions and paving a path for an open, inclusive company. This is evidence of the potential creativity holds within a professional setting. Yet, these expressions are regularly condemned creating a stifling work environment.
The call is not just for me; it's for the countless others who have endured similar struggles. We demand a revision of the 'professionalism' standards, to accommodate the value that creativity brings to the workplace. Let's decriminalize creativity in professional spaces. We urge you to sign this petition to advocate for a more inclusive and comprehensive view of professionalism.
