The Issue

My family and I have always valued the unique benefits that homeschooling provides, such as tailored education and the ability to deeply nurture our children's interests. However, this year, I was shocked to learn that despite New Jersey state law permitting homeschooled students to participate in high school sports, the final decision is left to individual school districts. Unfortunately, our own Saddle Brook School District has decided against this inclusivity.

This policy not only affects my children but also impacts every homeschooled student in our district who is eager to engage, compete, and learn valuable life skills through sports. Sports are an invaluable part of student life that fosters teamwork, discipline, and community spirit. Our children deserve the opportunity to proudly represent Saddle Brook and feel the pride of wearing a jersey with their hometown name on it, just like their peers.

Consider the broader educational and developmental impacts on homeschool students: they too should have the right to partake in sports to round out their educational experiences. By excluding them, we risk creating a divide and marginalizing these capable and willing students who are eager to contribute to and benefit from athletic programs.

This year, with new state policies accommodating homeschoolers in sports, let's urge the Saddle Brook Board of Education to align with this inclusive approach. By doing so, we promote diversity, fairness, and unity in our community, ensuring every child has a chance to shine on the field or court.

We ask that a revision of the current sports participation policy be put on the board's agenda and voted on in favor of allowing qualified homeschooled students who reside within the district to participate in district athletic programs on the same basis as other eligible students.

Join me in making our community more inclusive and supportive of all students. Sign this petition and help us ask the Saddle Brook Board of Education to make our school sports teams accessible to all students, regardless of their schooling method.
