Revise New Jersey’s school phone policy
The Issue
PETITION TO GOVERNOR MIKIE SHERRILL
REVISE THE NJ SCHOOL PHONE LAW
Allow Students to Use Their Devices During Non-Academic Periods
I am a New Jersey student who is directly affected by the current school phone policy. I am starting this petition because I believe students should have a voice in the rules that affect us every day.
We, the undersigned students, parents, educators, and New Jersey residents, respectfully ask Governor Mikie Sherrill and the State of New Jersey to support legislation revising New Jersey's current school phone restrictions.
We support limiting personal device use during academic instruction. Students should be focused and engaged when teachers are teaching.
However, we believe students should be allowed reasonable access to their personal devices during non-academic periods, including lunch, study hall, free periods, and other school-approved periods when academic instruction is not taking place.
We are asking Governor Sherrill to support a revision that would:
Allow students to use their devices during lunch.
Allow device use during study hall and other non-academic periods.
Keep restrictions in place during academic instruction.
Allow schools to establish reasonable rules for device use during non-academic periods.
Give students a voice in policies that directly affect them.
WHY WE ARE ASKING FOR THIS CHANGE
As a student, I understand why schools want to reduce distractions during class. However, lunch and study hall are different from instructional time.
We are not asking to use our phones whenever we want. We are asking for a reasonable compromise that allows responsible students to use their devices during designated non-academic periods while keeping classrooms focused on learning.
We are not asking for unlimited phone use during class.
We are asking for a balanced approach:
LEARNING FIRST.
RESPONSIBLE DEVICE USE WHEN LEARNING ISN'T HAPPENING.
I am asking Governor Sherrill to listen to New Jersey students and support legislation that would allow responsible device use during lunch, study hall, and other non-academic periods.
