The Issue

I have lived a life shaped by the environment I grew up in—surrounded by violence, loss, and negative influences. These circumstances steered me to make decisions that resulted in spending decades in prison. Throughout this time, I have matured, reflected, and transformed into a better man. It is this personal journey that fuels my belief that people who commit to genuine change through good behavior, education, and rehabilitation should be granted opportunities to realize their progress.

Current sentencing laws in Illinois often prioritize punishment over rehabilitation, leaving many incarcerated individuals without the chance to improve themselves and reintegrate into society successfully. This is why we propose the Credit for Change initiative, designed to offer sentence credits for good behavior, education, treatment, and participation in rehabilitation programs to those not serving natural life sentences.

Implementing this initiative promises broad benefits: it enhances prison safety by encouraging positive behavior, reduces the rate of recidivism, aids in addressing overcrowding and staffing shortages in correctional facilities, and provides significant taxpayer savings. Additionally, it furnishes individuals with the skills and preparation needed for a successful reintegration into their communities.

The effectiveness of similar initiatives in other states underscores the viability of this approach. For instance, states that have implemented sentence credit programs have experienced marked reductions in repeat offenses and smoother transitions of former inmates back into society.

By revising our sentencing laws to include opportunities for inmates to earn sentence credits, Illinois can become a model for reform, balancing justice with mercy and practicality. Let's change lives, reduce crime, and build safer communities together.

Join us in urging Illinois lawmakers to pass the Credit for Change initiative. Sign this petition to show your support for a fair and rehabilitative justice system.
