The Issue

As a parent deeply concerned about my child's mental health, I have witnessed firsthand the overwhelming stress that comes from unclear homework policies and the inconsistent use of digital platforms like PowerSchool and Google Classroom in Merrimack schools. My child, like many others, struggles to manage their schoolwork due to a lack of standardized procedures across different teachers. This situation makes it challenging for students to stay organized and meet deadlines, leading to unnecessary anxiety and academic pressure.

Currently, the lack of a unified policy for entering assignments and due dates on these platforms leaves students guessing what is due and when. This unpredictability not only affects their academic performance but also their mental well-being. Students need a clear and consistent approach to managing their workload, which is why I believe that a new policy should be implemented across Merrimack schools.

I propose that teachers be required to add all assignments and their corresponding due dates on PowerSchool or Google Classroom at least three days before they are due. This simple step would ensure that students have ample time to plan and prioritize their tasks, reducing stress and enhancing their ability to submit quality work on time.

Furthermore, the current homework late submission policy is excessively harsh and unforgiving. I suggest revising this to introduce a gradual penalty system: reduce grades by 10% if homework is turned in after one week, 20% after two weeks, and 30% after three weeks, with no credit given beyond this period. This gives students a second chance to learn from their mistakes and manage unforeseen circumstances without a detrimental impact on their grades.

To ensure accountability and transparency, the usage of 'collected' and 'missing' statuses on assignments should also be standardized, helping students keep track of their submissions effectively.

I urge the Merrimack school district to take these actionable steps to not only improve educational outcomes but also safeguard the mental health of its students. Implementing these changes will foster a supportive educational environment where students can thrive both academically and emotionally. Please join me in calling for this necessary reform by signing this petition. Together, we can make a difference for our children.
