The Issue

Changing my school's dress code to allow hoodies instead of uniforms is important to me because it gives students more freedom to express themselves and feel comfortable during the school day. Uniforms can feel restrictive and make everyone look the same, while hoodies let us show our personality through colors, styles, and even school spirit. Hoodies are also practical—they keep us warm in cold classrooms and are easy to wear. Allowing them would make school feel more relaxed and welcoming, which can contribute to a better learning environment.

Forney ISD’s current dress code mandates uniforms and prohibits hoodies, yet many students believe these uniforms stifle self-expression and do not account for practical needs. Hoodies are versatile, comfortable, and can indeed be worn in a manner that maintains a respectful and appropriate school environment. Additionally, having the flexibility to choose what to wear can boost students’ confidence and morale, thereby enhancing overall educational outcomes.

Many school districts across the nation have already made the shift away from strict uniform policies, recognizing the benefits of allowing students to express their individuality and comfort. These schools report increased student satisfaction and no decline in academic performance.

Aligning with these progressive educational practices, Forney ISD should reconsider the current dress code policy to allow hoodies as an option alongside uniforms. This change does not compromise the school’s values but rather aligns with a modern understanding of student needs and the importance of inclusivity and personal expression.

Encouraging individuality and comfort in attire can cultivate an inclusive school culture, where students not only feel free to be themselves but are also prepared for diverse environments post-graduation. It is essential for Forney ISD to listen to its student body and adapt to create a more welcoming atmosphere for all.
