Lunchtime at Discovery Canyon Campus High School is more than just a short break from our classes; it is an important time where students get to connect with friends. For many of us, lunchtime is the only opportunity we have to see others and socialize. However, the recent changes to the lunch schedule have severely impacted this experience.

Last year, we had 45 minutes for lunch, which provided sufficient time for students to eat and interact with each other. This year, the time has been cut down to just 30 minutes. Additionally, the passing period time has been increased to 7 minutes, which nobody realistically needs. Also, the previous system of having two separate lunch periods has been replaced with one congested period where everyone eats at the same time. This overcrowding only serves to diminish the quality of our lunchtime even further, making it stressful and hurried rather than enjoyable—as it should be.

Several studies highlight the importance of adequate lunchtime for students. According to research published in the Journal of School Health, students with more extended lunch breaks exhibit improved academic performance and better social behavior. Furthermore, a study by the School Nutrition Association found that a longer lunch period leads to increased food consumption, better nutrition, and less food waste.

In light of these compelling benefits, we urge the administration at Discovery Canyon Campus High School to reconsider and revise the current lunch schedule. Restructuring the schedule back to preferably 45 minutes and cutting the passing period back to what it was last year would significantly enhance our overall school experience.

We believe these changes will not only benefit the student body socially and academically but will also foster a sense of community and well-being within the school environment. Let's restore the value of our lunch break so we can maintain meaningful relationships and support our personal and academic growth.
