The Issue

Growing up in Denison, Texas, the excitement of starting high school was often overshadowed by the strict and outdated dress code at Denison High School. This dress code, which has been in place for over 35 years, unfairly targets students by imposing unnecessary and subjective rules that stifle self-expression and individuality.

I have personally witnessed how the dress code has created an environment of frustration and inequality. Female students, in particular, face disproportionate scrutiny, with rules heavily focusing on skirt lengths, shoulder exposure, and even hair styles. These outdated standards fail to reflect the evolving diversity and modern sensibilities of today’s society. For instance, guidelines that prohibit sleeveless tops or require knee-length skirts are not only restrictive but also irrelevant to our current social norms.

According to research by the National Education Association, outdated dress codes contribute to an uncomfortable school environment and fail to improve academic performance or discipline. Schools with modernized dress codes report better student morale and inclusivity. This is why it's essential that Denison High School revises its dress code to align with today’s more progressive standards, which other schools in the Texas area have already adopted successfully.

To achieve this change, we propose setting up a task force composed of students, teachers, and administrators to review and update the dress code. The key factors should emphasize comfort, inclusivity, and equality, while still maintaining a respectful school atmosphere. Additionally, collecting input from students throughout the process will ensure their voices are heard and their needs met.

Updating the dress code is not just about fashion—it's about fairness, equality, and fostering a positive educational environment for all students. By signing this petition, you are supporting a cause that values freedom of expression and the fair treatment of all students at Denison High School.

Sign the petition now to support the change towards a more equitable and modern dress code at Denison High School. Let our voices be heard and bring the necessary change for our community's students.
