As a student of Broughton High School for over three years, I've experienced firsthand the impact that our school's exam exemption policy has on students like me. While the policy is intended to motivate students to maintain good academic standing, in practice, it often adds undue stress and fails to recognize the diverse capabilities of the student body.

Broughton High School prides itself on fostering a supportive environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive. However, the current policy requires students to achieve near-perfect attendance and exemplary grades to qualify for exam exemptions. This rigid framework overlooks valid circumstances such as illness or family emergencies, creating unnecessary pressure and anxiety among students.

Statistics show that excessive academic stress can lead to mental health issues among teenagers. According to the American Psychological Association, over 60% of students report feeling stressed by school pressures, which can lead to burnout, decreased motivation, and academic decline. It is crucial that educational policies support, rather than hinder, a student's overall well-being.

I propose a revision of the exam exemption criteria to incorporate a more holistic approach. This could include allowing students to make up absences by attending office hours, and increasing the amount of unexcused absences allowed for both A’s and B’s. My proposal increases an A from 3 unexcused absences to 8, and increases a B from 1 unexcused absence to 6.

By doing so, Broughton High School can create a more balanced and inclusive academic environment that acknowledges student diversity and promotes genuine academic success and well-being.
