The Issue

To the district Superintendent and members of the School Board. We, the community members of district 279 would like to urge you to reconsider and amend Board Policy 626 regarding the weighted grading system in our district. It is crucial that we address the current inequity faced by students who diligently enroll in college courses through the Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) program.

Currently, our district fairly recognizes the dedication and academic rigor of students undertaking Advanced Placement (AP) courses by adding a 0.34 GPA bump. This well-deserved recognition supports our students on their journey to academic success and makes our policy a cornerstone of fairness. However, those students who choose the equally challenging PSEO path are not afforded the same recognition, despite the comparable level of academic challenge these programs present.

PSEO courses provide an invaluable opportunity for high school students to engage in college-level coursework, often allowing them to earn college credits while completing high school. These classes demand rigorous academic work and commitment comparable to AP. Yet, the lack of weighted grades for PSEO courses leaves a significant gap in our educational system’s support and recognition. And discourages students from taking college classes that could help the financially challenged earn an advanced degree.

We live in a district that prides itself on providing an equitable academic environment, but this policy falls short. Students in PSEO programs work incredibly hard, balancing both high school and college standards, which is a testament to their commitment to their education. Exclusion from the weighted grading system not only undervalues their efforts but also overlooks their contributions to the academic prestige of our district. It also allows students to complete an advanced degree sooner and with less financial impact.

Rectifying this oversight is not only about fairness but also about encouraging diverse paths to academic excellence. Ensuring that PSEO students receive a weighted GPA that reflects their hard work will foster an environment of inclusivity and academic equity.

I urge the School Board to amend Board Policy 626 to include a weighted grade bump for PSEO courses, similar to that provided for AP classes. This change will recognize the dedication of PSEO students, encourage participation in these valuable programs, and uphold the principles of fairness and equality in our district.

Please join me in calling on the School Board to take immediate action to rectify this discrepancy. Let's come together to ensure that all students receive the recognition they deserve for their academic achievements. Sign the petition to make our grading system fair for all.
