Review the E-Bike Law to Legalise 500W Motors and Throttle Powering

The Issue

Laws around e-bikes have not sufficiently kept pace with the rapid evolution of technology. Currently, the law only permits the use of motors up to 250W on e-bikes. This restrictive policy is limiting the potential growth of this market and reducing the options for consumers. By increasing the legal limit up to 500W for e-bike motors and allowing throttle powering, we can encourage a healthier, more eco-friendly mode of transport and increase safety on highly congested city streets by allowing quicker acceleration on traffic lights. Higher-powered e-bikes are efficient and can cover larger distances with less physical exertion, making them a practical alternative to cars and public transport for daily commuting. It also helps people with depression, anxiety and physical health problems to spend more time outdoors and live healthier lives. A study from the European Cyclists Federation shows that e-bikes produce 10 times less CO2 per kilometer than cars. This change could encourage more people to switch to e-bikes, promoting health, reducing congestion, and helping achieve environmental targets. We urge lawmakers to review this outdated law and recognise the potential of electric bikes for a future of greener, healthier living. Sign the petition and support the call for a modernised e-bike law.
