The Issue

My daughter and her boyfriend was tragically killed at the intersection of Highway 77 and River Bottom Road near Davis, Oklahoma. The heartbreak I feel is indescribable, and I strongly believe that no parent should ever have to endure such a devastating loss.

The roads in this area include dangerous blind curves, and the speed limit of 70 mph is simply too high for safe travel. This is not just a personal plea, but a call to action to protect everyone who drives on this stretch of road. Reducing the speed limit to 55 mph would allow drivers more time to react to unexpected obstacles and maneuver through these curves safely.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), reducing speed limits in high-risk areas has consistently shown to decrease the number and severity of accidents. Each year, approximately 9,000 lives are lost due to speed-related crashes. By taking action now, we can work towards preventing further tragedies in our community and saving lives.

We urge the Department of Transportation and local authorities to conduct a safety evaluation and reassess the current speed limits on Highway 77 and River Bottom Road. Implementing a reduced speed limit of 55 mph would be a proactive step towards ensuring the safety of all who travel these routes.

By signing this petition, you are supporting a crucial change that can save lives and honor the memory of those we have lost. Together, let’s make these roads safer for everyone. Please sign to show your support.
