Review film 'Suryaa' to prevent trust deficit and violence
The Issue
In recent times, I, along with numerous other healthcare professionals across India, have become increasingly concerned about the portrayal of the healthcare community in Bollywood films, particularly the recent release "Suryaa." This film, while thrilling and engaging, unfortunately paints an exaggerated and often inaccurate picture of the medical field, potentially exacerbating the existing trust deficit between doctors and patients. As someone dedicated to healing and aiding people in their most vulnerable moments, I believe it is crucial to address this issue before it further disrupts the delicate relationship we share with our patients.
Movies have a profound impact on public perception and can significantly shape societal attitudes. While I do not oppose artistic freedom or the portrayal of real-life issues, "Suryaa" seems to cross a line by sensationalizing the actions of a few unethical individuals within the medical community, inadvertently casting a shadow over the integrity of countless honest and hardworking doctors. Without careful portrayal and thoughtful narrative, such films can lead to misunderstandings and, worse yet, incidents of violence in clinical establishments, endangering both medical staff and patients.
According to a study conducted by the Indian Medical Association, there has been a notable rise in cases of violence against medical practitioners in recent years. Approximately 75% of doctors have faced some form of violence at work, ranging from verbal abuse to physical assault. Misrepresentations in media can inadvertently fuel this hostility, pushing the blame for systemic issues onto individual doctors, which is neither fair nor helpful.
I firmly advocate for legal action against those indulging in unethical medical practices. However, it is equally vital to protect the reputation of diligent healthcare workers from unwarranted criticism. Therefore, I urge the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to critically review "Suryaa," ensuring that it does not contribute unfairly to an environment of fear and distrust towards the medical community.
In doing so, we can foster a more informed public discourse where the narrative is balanced and based on factual, constructive criticism rather than sensationalism. Let's work together to maintain a safe environment in our clinical establishments, safeguard the dignity of our doctors, and provide our patients with the trust and security they rightfully deserve.
Please join me in urging the Ministry to take immediate action. Sign this petition to ensure that films like "Suryaa" do not negatively impact the sanctity and safety of medical practice in India.
