The Issue

Southend on Sea is known for its scenic seaside views. The beaches serve as a central hub for the community, for both humans and their four-legged companions. Currently, however, dogs are banned from accessing these beaches in the summer months.

Local dog owners propose a reasonable compromise: granting dogs access to the beaches early in the morning and late in the evening in the summer months and continuing with full access in the winter months. This proposal doesn't interfere with peak beach-going times in the summer but ensures that dogs and their owners can experience the seaside's refreshing beauty and tranquillity year round.

Numerous studies demonstrate that well-exercised dogs are happier, healthier, and less likely to cause nuisance (source: Humane Society). Given that Southend on Sea has a sizeable dog-owning community, allowing dogs on the beach could significantly improve the quality of life for many local residents and their pets.

Moreover, towns such as St Ives in Cornwall demonstrate that this approach can work harmoniously with other beach-goers.

In conclusion, our proposal aligns with the community's interests, promoting outdoor recreation for all. We ask the Southend-on-Sea City Council to reconsider the existing regulations and grant dogs access to local beaches during morning and evening hours in the peak months and continue with existing 24 hr access in off peak.
