Despite evidence of abuse, custody has been awarded to her father, placing her directly in harm's way. This is not just a personal battle, but a systemic issue that affects countless families who are let down by the very system that is meant to safeguard them.

Statistics indicate that in cases where there are allegations of domestic violence, courts mistakenly grant custody to abusive parents a significant percentage of the time. According to a study by the American Judges Association, abusive fathers are granted custody in many cases—66% of the time. This alarming flaw in the judicial process is not only a breach of justice but a tragic risk to the wellbeing and safety of children.

We demand an immediate review of custody cases where domestic violence is alleged to ensure that the safety of the child is the primary concern. Implementing a mandatory independent investigation into these cases, conducted by child welfare experts, will illuminate the reality of each situation and ensure informed decisions are made by the courts.

Furthermore, judges and those involved in custody decision-making must undergo comprehensive training on domestic violence issues and children's psychological needs to better understand and identify signs of abuse and the potential risks to child safety.
