The Issue

Over the years, ELD's Time Vault Games has run monthly Premodern events to great success. However, the entry fee has continued to climb, under the guise of “Price-Matching” other premodern events in the area. This is a petition urging ELD’s to return to its previous entry fee of $35. Here are some arguments that demonstrate why these continued price increases are beyond reason:

  • Entry fee going up does not inherently equate to a more competitive environment. There have been "High Roller" events in the past that did not have substantial turnout.
  • Other events increase entry prices due to outside factors that cause it to be necessary, primarily the increase of value in prize cards. For example, if a community wants to keep having a Mox Diamond as the first place prize in premier events, it becomes necessary to increase the entry fee, as the price of Mox Diamond has increased. This is compounded when it is not a store giving out the prizes, but individual members of the community running the event and personally sourcing event prizing.
  • A store “price matching” a community-run, card-prized event is a false equivalency when the payout for the store event is in store credit. Unlike events run by individuals, there is no change in the value or labor required by a store to run an event and provide prizing in the form of store credit.

The Premodern community is one of the greatest groups of people I have met in my life. People drive hours to go to these events, and unfortunately things like gas prices have been on the rise for a while now. I don't think there is a need to hike up the entry fee as well. I hope that as many people as possible will see and sign this petition. Hopefully they will come to see new perspectives on how people feel about the price increase for ELD's monthly Premodern events.
