Revert the BHS Start/End Times

Revert the BHS Start/End Times

The Issue

We, the Burlington High School community and more, are unhappy with the unprecedented change to our school schedule. As a result, here are some reasons as to why...

  • This horrendous time change was done in an untimely manner and was rather spontaneous. There may be the claim that we knew about this since the 2017-18 school year, but these were just rumors unconfirmed and unsubstantiated until now.
  • The advancement of an hour in the school times has a cascading effect on not only student lives, consequently, it affects family lives now as well.
  • Seeing as how most students take buses to get home after school, with last year's school time the last kid would get home at 3:00 PM it seems, with this new schedule it's only a matter of time before kids get home at 4:00 PM.
  • Additionally, this advancement of an hour in the school schedule will force students to shove everything in their lives after school an hour. Sports that used to end at 5:00 PM will now end at 6:00 PM. Social events with friends, jobs at the local store, sports events, all pushed an hour back. During winters, with short days, this schedule will keep kids in school for the whole day as they enter when there is daylight out, and by the time they leave there is only moonlight.
  • This bombastic change of our lives was done in our best interest, yet we were never asked for a hand in the matter. There was no inquiry as to what the students thought about the change; just people, who are not students themselves mind you, who thought it best to advance the school schedule an hour.

All in all, we call for our school times to be reverted to what it was originally during the 2017-2018 school year; school start times to begin at 7:30 AM and end times to be once again at 2:00 PM.
