The Issue

As a student at Ridgewood High School (RHS), I've experienced firsthand the negative ramifications of the newly implemented policy concerning the deactivation of student keycards and restrictions on door access. This change, intended for security purposes, is causing more harm than good to the student community.

The new regulation creates unnecessary obstacles, leading to significant delays as students hustle from one class to another. Instead of seamlessly moving between classes, we are now faced with frequent detours and delays. These disruptions clash with the timely flow of our school day and significantly impact our ability to maximize learning time, inevitably causing us to be late to classes.

Furthermore, the time wasted lining up outside closed doors or waiting for someone to grant us access undermines the efficiency of our school environment. The policy has introduced logistical challenges without offering clear benefits or improvements to student safety or school security.

From an educational standpoint, this adjustment hampers our ability to effectively manage our tight schedules, often causing anxieties about being late. Such stress can detract from the primary objective of school: learning.

It's imperative to re-evaluate this decision, address these concerns head-on, and explore alternative measures that reinforce security without compromising the students’ educational experience. For instance, implementing security personnel during peak hours or improving surveillance in tandem with student keycard accessibility could enhance safety without disrupting daily routines.

In light of these issues, I urge the administration of Ridgewood High School to seriously consider reversing the new keycard policy. Let's explore solutions that protect both our safety and education cohesively. Please join me in signing this petition to encourage our school's leadership to make a student-centric decision.
