Last week, on Monday, I walked into the Hunter College Office of Accessibility Testing Center, ready to study in the familiar computer lab, as was my usual routine. To my surprise, the front desk assistant informed me that the lab and conference rooms had been switched. This sudden change caught me off guard. The testing coordinator had briefly mentioned it to me before, but I was shocked at how swiftly the new setup was implemented. Typically, room changes take much more time, as we all know. I tried to stay positive, recalling the benefits of staying open to change, but adapting to the new setup proved to be more challenging than anticipated.

Traditionally, the larger room served as our computer lab, equipped with rows of computers that allowed many of us to study and complete work efficiently. The now-separated conference room used to be our testing area, specifically designed to support students who required a less distractive environment for their exams. This setup was well-tailored to meet the diverse needs of students utilizing the Accessibility Testing Center.

The current arrangement, however, does not cater effectively to the students' varying needs. The smaller room lacks sufficient space and resources to accommodate students who rely heavily on the computer lab for their studies. Additionally, the larger room—which is now the test-taking area—is less conducive to providing an environment free from distractions, which is vital for many students with accommodations.

Reverting to the original setup is not just a personal preference but a rational request backed by the needs of the student body relying on these facilities. We must advocate for an environment that respects and accommodates the diverse requirements of accessibility students.

Hunter College claims to prioritize inclusivity and equal access to education, yet this recent change indicates otherwise. It is crucial that the Office of Accessibility re-evaluates the new layout and considers reinstating the old setup to enhance our academic experience and ensure educational equity for all students.
