The Issue
The recent decision to implement a waitlist for the Childcare Assistance Program in Onondaga County presents a significant threat to the livelihood of countless families in our community. Come June 1st, many stable and working families will be at risk of losing their jobs due to a waitlist that extends 1-2 months. Childcare costs can amount to approximately $350 a week PER child, which is sometimes more than rent, making it insurmountable for families to afford especially with such limited notice.
This decision to place recertifying families onto a waitlist removes safety and consistency from those of us who have been able to achieve stability through hard work and determination. It's disheartening to think that the progress many of us have fought so hard for is now under threat due to this change. It also prevents families who are moving in the right direction from actually taking a job. In a county with such high child poverty rates, and an already ongoing issue with homeless family rates, this choice will be devastating.
This is a major issue for families in Onondaga County. This backwards step will undo the progress many have achieved. The cost of staying silent is too high, and we must act to reverse this decision. We demand that our leaders listen to the voices of working parents and reconsider the implementation of this waitlist policy.
This is about real families who rely on these services to maintain employment, contribute to the community, and secure a future for their children. This also has the potential to create a lack of childcare issue, if providers cannot afford to stay open due to losing participants and funding. We urge those with authority over these decisions to find a solution that doesn't put working families and childcare providers in jeopardy. Without prompt intervention, this will be devastating for the community. Additionally, blindsiding working families with a letter marked May 19th, about a discontinuation of childcare assistance beginning June 1st is unacceptable. This needs to be remedied as quickly as this was expected to be digested by families.
Support this petition to reverse the decision to start a waitlist for CCAP and protect the stability and livelihoods of families in Syracuse, Onondaga County.
