Pub culture is an integral part of British heritage, closely held dear by many including myself. However, the smoking ban in the UK is leading to a negative impact on these public spaces. As a result, many businesses are significantly burdened and experiencing a notable downslide. The smoking ban has put a substantial amount of strain on the hospitality industry, threatening to diminish our vibrant pub culture. With the decrease in customer turnout after the ban, owners of pubs, clubs, and bars are finding it difficult to keep their establishments running. Moreover, according to a report by the Institute of Economic Affairs, close to 11,000 pubs have closed in the UK since the smoking ban in 2007, evidencing a direct correlation between the ban and a decline in business. What is required is a balanced, more liberal approach that respects the rights of smokers while also recognizing the health implications involved. We beseech the UK government to reassess the all-encompassing ban, and to find middle ground that might help tremendously struggling businesses.
