Reverse the Policy of Parliamentary Heating Allowances at the Expense of the Vulnerable

The Issue

This petition arises from a deeply personal belief that the policy that allows members of Parliament to claim heating allowances, whilst denying the most vulnerable the winter fuel allowance, is unacceptable. It's a shocking reality that our elected officials enjoy heating benefits while the very people they represent must choose between heating and eating.

Recent data revealed the staggering fact that 2.5 million households in the UK are living in fuel poverty (source: National Energy Action). Meanwhile, the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) has shown that in 2020, MPs claimed more than £1.3 million in heating allowances. This is whilst the National Audit Office (NAO) notes that the number of our elderly citizens who died due to cold related illnesses has risen.

Our MPs sit comfortably in a heated Parliament with our taxes taking care of their bills. This policy is unfair and severely impacts upon those who are the most vulnerable among us - the elderly, the sick, low-income families, the very people whose welfare our MPs should be prioritising.

This policy needs to be discussed immediately in the Commons and we implore our MPs to put citizen welfare above their personal comforts by revoking this unjust labour policy. Our seniors and disadvantaged citizens should not have to suffer due to the cold while our parliamentarians stay warm at their expense.

This is not an issue of politics, but one of basic morality and fairness. It's time to rectify this and prioritise vulnerable citizens over parliamentary privilege.

Please, stand with us in asking for this policy to be overturned. Sign the petition and let's make a warmer difference in the lives of the many.
