The Issue

As a young kid, I looked forward to high school, where I expected to be treated with respect and trusted to know what I wanted and should do. However, upon arriving at school, these new laws were enforced, which don't effectively address the issues they aim to solve and disregard the needs of the students they affect.

The recent phone ban in Missouri schools is a significant overreach and fails to tackle the problems it purports to. This policy suggests that students are incapable of responsible phone use, which undermines our maturity and capacity to make the right decisions about our education and personal life. A phone isn't just a tool for distraction; it's a gateway to resources, communication, and emergency assistance.

For many, phones are essential for keeping in touch with family, conducting research beyond school hours, and even coordinating extracurricular activities. The ban dismisses these benefits and instead paints students as irresponsible. Evidence shows that complete bans don’t necessarily result in increased academic performance, nor do they significantly decrease distractions. Instead, they create an environment of mistrust, treating us more like children incapable of self-regulation rather than young adults preparing for independence.

Trust can foster a more respectful and engaged student body. Rather than a full ban, schools could implement policies that encourage responsible use, teaching us to balance phone use with academic responsibilities.

Support this petition to request a reevaluation of the phone ban policy to create a more balanced and respectful school environment, that acknowledges and trusts students' ability to manage their devices effectively. Sign this petition to help bring about a fair solution that respects all parties involved.
