The Issue

Long Island Village, with its serene waterways and vibrant community life, has been slammed with a baffling and unjust reclassification as an industrial district. This move feels less like thoughtful urban planning and more like a retaliatory strike using a loophole in SB2308 to maintain control over an area losing its Port Isabel Extraterritorial Designation. As a concerned resident/and or business owner, I am deeply outraged by this change, as it not only disrespects our rights but also threatens the future of our beloved community.

Long Island Village is known for its beautiful landscape, residential calm, and a strong sense of community alongside our neighbors in Port Isabel. These characteristics are not compatible with the noise, pollution, and environmental strain that an industrial district inevitably brings. The community could face reduced property values, increased traffic congestion, and deterioration of local natural resources, impacting the quality of life we currently enjoy.

There is precedence to support our stance. Similar up-zoning attempts across the country have been successfully contested, and reverted when communities came together to protect their neighborhoods. We can employ these successful strategies, leverage legal avenues, and push for legislative support to reverse this ill-considered industrial classification.

The residents of Long Island Village have already faced significant challenges in recent years. The resilience and unity of our community are strengths that have carried us through tough times before, and will now be the force to reverse this unexpected zoning change. We deserve to have our voices heard in decisions that dramatically impact our lives and our homes.

We call on city planners, county officials, and relevant authorities to reconsider and rescind this industrial district designation. It is crucial that urban development respects the character and needs of existing communities. Let's work together to ensure that Long Island Village remains a peaceful residential area where families can thrive.

Please stand with us by signing this petition to defend Long Island Village from this misguided industrial designation and to safeguard our community for future generations. Your support is vital in showing our strength in numbers and amplifying our appeal for justice.
