Reverse the Evrim Sen Decision - Shire of Yarra Ranges - Tiny Houses are homes - July 25
The issue
Petition Summary:
The Yarra Ranges Council has ordered Evrim Sen and her family to vacate their Tiny House on Wheels in Belgrave South in the Shire of Yarra Ranges,Victoria, Australia. A safe, off-grid home — despite being in the middle of a housing emergency, with rental vacancy rates below 2.5%
If enforced, this decision could make the family homeless. Worse still, it sets a precedent: others living in Tiny Houses and caravans — often their only available shelter — may also be forced out.
Yet there is already a lawful, ready-to-adopt solution: Professor Arnold Dix has submitted a resolution that would immediately allow the temporary use of Tiny Houses on Wheels and caravans during the housing crisis, under safety standards and planning discretion.
Council Reverse the Evrim Sen Decision by the Shire of Yarra Ranges — Let Families Stay in Tiny Homes & Caravans in a Housing Crisis
il has the power to act — and it can act now.
We Urge the Yarra Ranges Council to:
• Reverse the enforcement action against Evrim Sen and her family
• Immediately adopt Professor Dix’s resolution to allow the temporary use of Tiny Houses and caravans as homes
• Use Green Wedge zoning discretion to support low-impact, sustainable, compassionate housing
• Continue your good work supporting frontline community organisations already addressing the crisis, including: Holy Fools, Food Bank, Shelter One, Benwerren, Vinnies , The mustard Tree, the Salvos, Linc and the Yarra Ranges Emergency Relief Network, to name but a few! In particular, in Warburton, we commend The Cerini Centre affordable housing project.
We Call on the Premier of Victoria and the Prime Minister of Australia to:
• Publicly support the use of caravans and Tiny Homes as emergency housing
• Fund and coordinate a national housing crisis response, shaped by local knowledge and frontline service providers
• Back local councils in using their discretion under planning rules — especially in Green Wedge areas — to allow temporary, humane accommodation
• Embrace the leadership of community and experts like Professor Dix, and act with the same call to kindness echoed by both him and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese
A Call to Kindness
We call on our elected leaders — local, state, and federal — to act not only within the law, but within compassion.
Kindness, not red tape, is what communities need when people are living in cars, sheds, caravans, and Tiny Houses.
This is not a loophole — it is a lifeline. The solution is written. It is ready. All it needs is to be adopted. Evrim Sen and her family need a home. Today.
Sign this petition to demand:
✔️ Housing over eviction
✔️ Lawful compassion over rigid enforcement
✔️ Kindness — now.
