Hello neighbor! We are parents from PS 110 - The Monitor School. We’ve been working for over a year to find ways to make our community safer for everyone. We are concerned about unsafe conditions for students, families, and neighbors on Monitor Street. 

Therefore, we are asking the NYCDOT for a street direction reversal on Monitor St. between Driggs and Nassau Aves. This would drastically reduce illegal truck and cut-through traffic while maintaining access for residents and the school community.

Monitor between Nassau and Driggs is a beautiful block beside McGolrick Park and home to PS110 - a Pre-K through 5th grade with 500 students - 87% of whom walk or bike to school. Though it is not a truck route, trucks and other cars regularly use Monitor as a cut-through street - traveling too fast, in vehicles that are too big. Large trucks and emergency vehicles get trapped in school traffic. In one instance, an irate truck driver entered the school searching for the driver of a car blocking his way.  It’s not an atmosphere that any parent or neighbor wants.

A direction reversal will:

• remove the incentive for truck and through-traffic to use this beautiful residential street as a highway
• create a safer environment for neighbors, students, and families
• allow for easy passage for local drivers
• put the passenger side door facing the school, so children would not have to enter into the road when exiting their cars

Please join with us in requesting a street direction reversal on Monitor Street between Nassau Avenue and Driggs Avenue from the Department of Transportation.
