The Issue

Mr. Rowland is a beacon of hope and support at Westlake High School's TLC program, and his presence has been nothing short of transformative for countless students, including myself. Without him, my journey through high school would have been immeasurably more difficult. His unmatched support, guidance, and genuine care have been pivotal in my growth and success, as well as that of many of my peers. The Eanes ISD School Board's decision to remove his counseling position threatens the very fabric of our community and the successful operation of the TLC program.

Mr. Rowland is not just a counselor; he is a mentor and a friend to whom students could turn in their hour of need. His contributions extend far beyond the confines of his job description, impacting students' academic performance and emotional well-being. Statistics consistently show that support systems like the one Mr. Rowland provides are crucial for student success. According to the American School Counselor Association, students with access to school counselors have significantly higher graduation rates and improved mental health outcomes.

The removal of Mr. Rowland will undeniably alter the TLC program's dynamic and efficacy. It will erode the trust and rapport he has diligently built with students over the years. His unique ability to relate to and inspire students cannot be easily replaced, and his absence will leave a void difficult to fill. The school board's decision seems short-sighted, not reflecting the real impact Mr. Rowland has had on students' lives over his tenure.

We urge the Eanes ISD School Board to reconsider their decision and reinstate Mr. Rowland, respecting not only his invaluable contribution but also the wishes of the students and parents who have witnessed first-hand the difference he makes. Let’s ensure that the TLC program remains a supportive and nurturing environment for all students.

Please sign this petition to support Mr. Rowland and the continuation of a thriving TLC program at Westlake High School. Together, we can make a difference for our future students.

Thank you for writing on behalf of all the community members who have signed the petition on Change.org. I have read through each of the testimonials and endorsements that the community has submitted. The TLC program has benefited students in ways that perhaps we don’t even know yet. I am hopeful that these lessons will carry forward far beyond the time students were enrolled in our district. Mr. Rowland was a significant part of that. I would like to personally thank him for his many dedicated years of service. Regarding this counseling position, please know that personnel matters including this one are handled through administrative processes and are not typically within the Board of Trustees’ role. That said, the Board does value hearing from students, staff and community members because it helps us better understand the perspectives and concerns across our district. Respectfully, Catherine Walker Trustee Place 6 Board President [Note: The Change.org Civic Engagement Team reaches out to decision makers to let them know about petitions in their community and to help facilitate engagement with supporters. The above was an email response we received regarding this petition.]
