The Issue

I am deeply concerned about the recent decision by the Scottish Rugby Union (SRU) Board to cut professional contracts for the women’s national team. At a time when women’s sport is experiencing remarkable growth and gaining the recognition it has long deserved, this decision could not come at a worse time. Women’s rugby, especially in Scotland, has been on an upward trajectory, inspiring countless young women and girls to take up the sport and dream of playing at the highest level.

By cutting professional contracts, the SRU Board risks undoing years of progress in promoting gender equality and the visibility of women in sport.

Furthermore, professional contracts are critical for players who dedicate themselves entirely to the sport. Without them, players may be forced to leave the game or struggle financially to maintain themselves at an international competitive level. This impacts performance on the world stage and overall morale within the team.

It would be incredibly short-sighted to assume that this will only affect the current cohort of top-level players - this decision by the SRU is a step backward at a crucial moment for women's sport across the globe.  They are sending a direct message to women and girls who are being inspired by this brilliant group of players.  I urge the SRU to rethink what they would like that message to be.

It’s vital to maintain the momentum and investment in women's rugby, to empower the athletes who work tirelessly, not only to represent Scotland but to inspire future generations of players. Restoring these contracts will show a commitment to equality, dignity, and fair opportunity.

Let us call on the Scottish Rugby Union Board to reverse their decision and ensure the women’s national team is treated with the professionalism and respect their talent and dedication merit. Please sign this petition to support our national team and the future of women's rugby in Scotland.
