The Issue

We, the HU community, urge the current administration to reverse its decision to close the in-person Harrisburg University Counseling Center. This decision is extremely detrimental to the well-being of students at HU and shows a clear disconnect between the administration and the student body.

The counseling center, while small, is a critical resource that many depend on to survive. A 24/7 support line is simply not the same as meeting with the same skilled, in-person counselor consistently. There is a level of trust that is necessary for many of these hard conversations; these are relationships that won't be possible with an on-demand counseling service like BetterMynd.  In-person counselors can also take non-verbal cues like body language into account, helping them further understand students and even notice warning signs before self-harm occurs.

Further, the fact that such a decision has been made without any input from the community and without any warning is troubling. The Town Hall was a wonderful display of teamwork, so we are wholly disappointed in the lack of correspondence before such a drastic measure was taken.
