Reverse the ban on ChatGPT and Google at Kellenberg Memorial high school
The Issue
As students of Kellenberg Memorial High School, we are heavily affected by the recent ban on critical digital tools such as ChatGPT and Google.
These tools are more than mere conveniences. They are integral to our study routines, allowing us to create personalized study guides, organize our schedules with planners, and verify our work to ensure accuracy and understanding. ChatGPT, in particular, serves as a virtual tutor, guiding us through complex problems and enhancing our learning experience. Yet, because some students may have misused these resources, all of us are now being denied access.
It's crucial to recognize that in today's educational environment, technology plays a pivotal role in facilitating learning. According to a 2020 report by the Pew Research Center, 58% of American high school students rely on technology for at least part of their learning strategies. Without these tools, we face a significant disadvantage in our education compared to our peers worldwide, especially as digital literacy becomes increasingly essential for future endeavors.
We understand the school's concerns about irresponsible use, but by banning these platforms completely, all students—responsible users included—are being punished for the actions of a few. A more balanced approach could involve teaching students about the responsible use of technology and integrating these platforms into structured learning activities under guidance.
We urge the Kellenberg Memorial administration to consider the detrimental impact of this ban on our academic success and to act in favor of a policy that balances responsibility with opportunity. Sign this petition if you believe that access to modern learning tools is an essential right for all students striving for excellence.
