As a young student and future adult in Alberta, the importance of education holds immense value for both myself and my peers. It's disheartening to witness a ban on books in our school and public libraries, a decision that fundamentally undermines our ability to access knowledge—a right that should be available to all. This directive from the Alberta Government limits our educational and intellectual growth by restricting the variety of perspectives and information accessible to us.

Alberta's decision to ban certain books in educational and public institutions threatens the very foundation of a diverse and comprehensive education. Libraries and schools are meant to be fountains of knowledge, embracing diverse voices and stories. When books are censored, the adverse consequences are numerous: it hinders critical thinking, suppresses creativity, and negatively impacts cultural and historical understanding.

Studies have shown that access to a wide array of literature contributes significantly to a student's ability to empathize, innovate, and succeed in various facets of life. According to the American Library Association, attempts to challenge or ban books saw a surge over the years, underscoring a troubling trend that limits freedom of information—a principle that Canadian society holds dear.

Alberta’s vibrant cultural fabric is built upon the ability to understand and appreciate multiple viewpoints. Inhibiting access to books not only harms students intellectually but also impoverishes our communities and stagnates progression toward a more informed society.

I urge the Alberta Government to reconsider this decision and reverse the ban on books in school and public libraries. It’s vital for the intellectual progression of our youth and for fostering a society that values open access to information.
